April Chew and Mona Shattell join the 2015 ISHC lineup

I’m excited to announce new speakers for the 2015 Independent School Health Conference! April Chew, MS, RN and Mona Shattell, PhD, RN, FAAN will be our Friday keynote speakers! During the session, April and Mona will detail their research on School Nurses’ Beliefs and Interventions for Childhood Obesity. Get to know these wonderful ladies in more detail below!

About April

Chew_April_photoApril C. Chew, MS, RN is an adjunct faculty member teaching in the School of Nursing’s RN to MS in nursing online degree program at DePaul University and a staff nurse on the Progressive Care Unit at Beacon Health – Elkhart General Hospital in Elkhart, IN. Prior to this she was a staff nurse on telemetry units at Presence Health – St. Joseph Hospital and Advocate Health – Illinois Masonic Medical Center, both in Chicago. At St. Joseph Hospital, she was a member of the New Knowledge, Innovations & Improvements subcommittee of the Magnet committee, served as co-chair of the Nursing Research committee, and taught the “Demystifying Nursing Research” course offered by the hospital. She received a Master of Science degree in nursing from DePaul University and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, also from DePaul University. Community health, obesity prevention, and heart failure treatment and management are the focus of her research and practice. She worked as an executive assistant and project manager in her business career prior to finding her true purpose in life as a nurse.

About Mona

monaMona Shattell, PhD, RN, FAAN is Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development in the College of Science and Health, and Professor in the School of Nursing at DePaul University in Chicago. She received a PhD in nursing from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, a Master of Science degree in nursing from Syracuse University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, also from Syracuse University. Dr. Shattell is Associate Editor of Advances in Nursing Science and Issues in Mental Health Nursing, a regular blogger for The Huffington Post, and the author of more than 100 journal articles and book chapters.
