The wait is over…National Nutrition Month is here!

We’re six days into National Nutrition Month (NNM). Did you even know March is National Nutrition Month? (I didn’t.) Have you done anything this month to alter your own diet and improve your own nutrition? (Sort of.) How about helping others do the same? (Nope.) I'm Blogging National Nutrition Month

I’ll be honest, National Nutrition Month doesn’t stick out on the calendar to  me. When I think of March, I think of St. Patrick’s Day, and the nutritional value of St. Patty’s Day is typically somewhat lacking.

Even so, March is, in fact, National Nutrition Month, “a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics,” (eatright.org). How to eat healthily is not a well-kept secret. I know full well the Twix in my purse isn’t on the list of healthy choices, but still it’s in my purse. I can almost hear it calling my name. In my defense, it is fun size.

My point though, is even though we all know junk food isn’t the healthiest option, it’s still difficult to regularly choose wisely. Even though we all know it’s an important part of preventative health care, and health professionals encourage us to make healthy choices in an effort to avoid conditions like diabetes, it’s hard. Really hard. That’s why this campaign focuses “attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.”

The NNM 2013 theme, “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day”, “encourages personalized healthy eating styles and recognizes that food preferences, lifestyle, cultural and ethnic traditions and health concerns all impact individual food choices.” You can promote NMM at your school, work, or organization with the provided promotional resources or media resources. Maybe you, or a student or coworker, just need a little education, support, or a nudge in the right direction to develop informed food decision making habits. With fact sheets, games, quizzes, press releases, and more, everyone can benefit from new knowledge, or reinforcement. It certainly can’t hurt.

Now, please excuse me while I look for help with my Twix obsession.
