Make browser bookmarks work for you

school_open_book_croppedMy mother is an elementary school media specialist, and she always taught me never to dog-ear a book. As a result, I own a number of bookmarks. Sure, they masquerade as other things – receipts, wrapping paper, socks – but their real purpose in life, the reason they were put on this Earth, is to function as cutting-edge bookmarks. Why? Because there is nothing more frustrating than re-reading something 12 times, or being in the middle of what can only be described as the greatest love story mankind has ever been privy to (thank you, Nicholas Sparks), and losing your place because a child needs attention, or you fall asleep and the book falls off the bed. You see, these are real issues, and bookmarks fix them. Such a small thing, but what a big invention.

It’s really no surprise that once all things transitioned to the interwebs (another name for the Internet), we needed bookmarks there too. Because other than losing your place in a physical book, there’s nothing more frustrating than losing a web page, having to sort through emails to find a certain link, or claiming you read something, but never being able to tell where, why, when, or how you did it. So, the interweb gods gave us browser bookmarks, and I’m here to tell you – they are great, they are easy, and they are even more useful than the used sucker stick shoved in my copy of Tina Fey’s Bossy Pants. (If you haven’t read Bossy Pants, I implore you to rush out to your local book store, or login to your favorite online bookstore, or light up your Kindle, or access your library, and read it. I’ll wait while you do that.) Okay, moving on.

Here’s how easy it is to bookmark a website in Chrome and Firefox.

  1. Click the star icon in the url bar.
  2. All done.

See, that was easy.

Once you’ve saved a bookmark, you can determine if you’d like it to go in a certain folder and all that jazz, and each browser walks you through what you need to do. The secret is just to start using the bookmarks. You can’t break anything by using bookmarks, they’ll make your life a lot easier, and they’ll help you save time. Think of the sites you visit on a daily basis, or even the ones you just want to remember for months to come – wouldn’t it be a lot easier to have those stored in a safe, neat little folder where you can find and visit them with just a click?

bookmark_3Magnus users visit a few pages every single day, but over the course of the year, Magnus users may visit any number of pages. We want to make it easy for you to get to those pages quickly. So, we created a folder of bookmarks you can import to Chrome or Firefox. All you have to do is download the zipped file. Inside that folder, you’ll find a PDF document (read it before doing anything else) with step by step instructions for how to install your bookmarks. Follow these instructions and in no time, you’ll have all the Magnus bookmarks you need, stored in a nice, neat little folder, so that each day when you start, all you have to do is click and voila’, Magnus is open and ready for you to login. DISCLAIMER: Do not bookmark any pages INSIDE your Magnus account, as doing so can cause caching issues. For example, do not bookmark a specific student’s medical record page – no matter now many times he or she comes to visit you, bookmarking their record can cause problems. Bookmark pages external to your Magnus account only.
