Stress Relief Activities to Aid in Reducing Childhood Stress

student_depressed at schoolFamily issues, bullying, homework, and even world news are just some of the many triggers that can attribute to increased stress in a child’s life. Experiencing stress at an early age is common and normal, but too much stress can have negative repercussions on children’s health. Even though there are some stressful situations in life we can’t control, having “supportive relationships with adults as early in life as possible can prevent or reverse the damaging effects of toxic stress”. Here are some stress relief activities that can be implemented at school or at home to help reduce childhood stress:

Going for walks
Any physical activity generates endorphins, but you don’t have to partake in an intense workout to reduce stress. Simply going for walks for at least 20 minutes will boost endorphins and reduce stress hormones! Walking outside is the perfect time to talk to a child and offer support for them while enjoying nature and scenery.

Trying a new recipe
Whether it’s cooking or baking, preparing a meal is a therapeutic way to ease your child’s mind. These activities require creativity and focus, stimulate a child’s senses, and help reduce the feelings of stress. Have your child pick their recipe of choice and join them in this activity. The rewarding satisfaction of the final outcome is sure to improve their mood and make for a positive bonding experience.

Studies reveal that coloring helps reduce stress and improve mood. Engaging in coloring activities with your children will not only boost their creativity, but it will also switch their focus away from the stress and onto something more soothing and relaxing.

These stress relief activities are simple, but crucial and should be implemented as often as possible at home and at school!
